Today I'm starting on "A Vintage Journey" - it's a new challenge blog that specializes in vintage projects using the Tim Holtz style, his products and inspiration. It doesn't get any better than that. Here is my first make - I hope to play along often.
Since this project is rather Steampunk(ish), I decided to play along with the challenge over at SanDee & amelie's Steampunk Challenge blog as well.
Here's how I did it -
With the theme of Time Flies - I of course had to use all things clock. I started out with Tim's Tick Tock Die from Sizzix. I cut the hands and clock from Grunge Board. I had a round tin with a transparent lid that I wanted to use so I punched a hole in the center and put the hands on with a brad.
After covering the clock die cut with embossing ink, I used silver embossing powder and then heat set it. While the embossing powder was still hot I sprinkled on a little bit of black embossing powder here and there. For that grungy look I edged the entire clock with brown and then added just a little Vintage Photo Distress Paint for that worn look. Next step was to cut some wings from copper using Tim's Layered Wings Die. I wanted the wings smaller to fit the scale of the clock so simply cut them to size. After embossing them with a Texture Fade embossing folder, I added some Vintage Photo Distress Paint and then added a patina look by using Broken China and Peeled Paint Distress Paints.
After some stash diving I came up with a small canvas and a wooden frame. I covered the canvas with gesso and then cut it and rolled the cut edges to the outside of the canvas frame.
I filled the center of the picture frame with chipboard to make it flat. Marked it off where I planned to add the canvas.
I then found the gears, clocks, watch parts etc. that I wanted to use and covered them with gesso.
After I finished all the gluing and a couple coats of gesso I glued the two pieces together.
Next I sprayed the entire thing with Sepia Spray from Lindy's Stamp Gang and then a coat of Dark Chocolate Truffle Spray. I still wanted it darker on the inside so I added some dark brown acrylic paint.
I was pretty happy with the results but it was a whole lot of brown (even though it is Tim's favorite color) so I decided to add some patina using the same process as on the wings. I used the patina color on many of the gears and clock parts.
I love it when my husband brings me flowers but when he came in from the garage with the gear pictured above I couldn't have been happier. He told me the garage door chain had broken and this fell off. Even better than flowers.
After the sprays, paints, and glues were all dry I added the clock with a photo that really does show how time flies. It is two photos of Mac and I. One taken the first year we were married (nearly 50 years ago) and a recent one. A few finishing touches and it was done.
Hope you have enjoyed the first leg of my Vintage Journey and will come back to see where the adventure take's me.
Make something grungy,

What a fantastic wonderful streampunk frame, it is so beautiful, thank you for sharing!!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy. Your vintage steampunk frame is really cool. So many steps went into this to create such a dimensional fun piece! I love all of the texture you've created through the addition of the gears, clock faces, clock hands, etc. And you've really done a beautiful job of making your piece look like such an old metallic frame. Thanks so much for sharing your art with us at A Vintage Journey. <3 Candy
